Zoroastrianism is one of the oldest known religions in the world, with origins dating back over 3,000 years. It began in ancient Persia, in the region that is now modern-day Iran. The religion was founded by the prophet Zoroaster, also known as Zarathustra, who lived sometime between 1800 and 1200 BCE, though the exact dates of his life are uncertain.
According to tradition, Zoroaster was born into a society that practiced polytheism and animal sacrifice. From a young age, he questioned these practices and sought a deeper understanding of the divine. After years of searching, he experienced a vision of Ahura Mazda, the supreme god of truth, light, and goodness. Zoroaster came to believe that Ahura Mazda was the one true god and that the world was shaped by a constant struggle between good, represented by Ahura Mazda, and evil, represented by Angra Mainyu, the destructive spirit.
Zoroaster began teaching that humans have free will and that every person has a role in this cosmic struggle. By choosing truth, kindness, and order (asha), individuals support the forces of good. By choosing lies, violence, and chaos (druj), they support evil. This focus on moral choice was a major shift from the older religious traditions of the time, which often emphasized rituals and sacrifices more than personal ethics.
The religion slowly spread throughout Persia and gained prominence during the Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BCE), especially under kings like Darius the Great, who promoted Zoroastrian values in governance. Fire temples became central places of worship, as fire was seen as a symbol of purity and the divine presence.
The origins of Zoroastrianism are significant because they laid the foundation for many ideas later found in other major religions, such as heaven and hell, the final judgment, and the battle between good and evil. What began with the teachings of a single prophet in ancient Persia eventually grew into a faith that influenced much of the religious thought of the Middle East and beyond.
